If shoppers on your site can be segmented into types, you can now isolate their activity in Google Analytics reporting. This insight into shopper behaviors can inform your site redesign or otherwise give you clues on what improvements may benefit a specific type of shopper. For example, if you sell to wholesale dealers as well as retail direct consumers, you're serving two types of shoppers. Now you can better understand each one:
First, a customer type is configured within the Commerce Admin Area under the User Accounts tab. You specify a name for this customer type, and it's this name that will show up in your Google Analytics reporting.
- Look for the URL in Top Content or other page file name reports that looks like /session?user_type=WHOLESALE, where WHOLESALE is the name of your customer type.
This URL is sent to Google Analytics when a shopper logs into his or her website account. Wholesale shoppers would do this so as to view their special pricing and or complete a purchase. Once logged in, all of their visitor session can be flagged in Google Analytics for special analysis.
The relatively new Advanced Segments feature in Google Analytics is what you'll use to make the behavior of these customer types something you can examine free from any other shopper behaviors.
If you have customer types, our Commerce Support team will follow-up with you directly to help you configure this in Google Analytics. As part of your Priority Support program, we'll configure this for you and show you how to view this neat peek into the behaviors of each type of shopper.
